Magazine Ideas and Construction

Another part of our ancillary task was to create a magazine advert to promote our unsigned artist and their debut album ensuring we included aspects to promote it such as the artists name, the album name, reviews and ratings, the record label, the release date etc.

Photoshoot- 19th and 28th January 2015

We decided to take photos for the magazine advert on the same days as the digpak as we wanted the digipak and magazine advert to have synergy in that they were taken at the same if not similar places so that a link could be made between the two. We wanted our magazine advert to be similar if not the same to the album cover; the photos taken which included the digipak and magazine advert can be seen on my digipak page. When we reviewed the images for our magazine advert we decided the potentially best ones were some of the ones taken by Kathryn and Annabelle on the stairs in the town location which is featured within our music video and brickwork which is seen within all three text pieces.

It was mainly Annabelle and Kathryn that took a lead role in the construction of the magazine advert as I was carrying out the digipak audience research and then went on to take the lead role in terms of editing which is why Kathryn and Annabelle worked alongside one another to edit the chosen photos that we decided as a team would work best in the same style as the digipak which allowed intertextual references to be made within the two products. They created three different versions of the magazine advert to be reviewed by our audience feedback which can be seen below.

Lucy then gathered a talley of results by asking people around the sixth form which one they preferred and wrote notes commenting on why and after collecting the talley of results Annabelle went on to put the results in to a table and chart using edexcel which can be viewed below. Some of the comments people made included:

-Liking the colours/filters

-The font is eye catching and appealing

-Everything is clear and readable

-Looks professional

-Realistic and believable

One of our potential magazine adverts is in fact the front cover of our digipak with the others being very similar. From our results you can see that the first digipak seen above won by one additional vote out of the 25 people we asked although prior to this the picture that we're using for the front cover of the digipak was winning until we asked people within our media class who knew what to look for in terms of editng, postioning and things like line of vision etc. One of the feedback comments we received on our digipak was that they liked the colours and filter we used which is why we also opted to use the same effect for all of our magazine advert options. In addition to carrying out this form of research Annabelle also carried out a magazine advert video interview to hear the opinions of what other people preferred and why they liked this which allowed us to gain qualitative feedback in terms of what they liked and why and what they felt could be improved etc. When Annabelle did this only one person ended up choosing the one that won overall and we made the ultimate decision to use and two people choosing the same image as the front panel on the digipak as people liked the fact the artist was making direct contact with the camera and that the shot was taken full frontal but because Annabelle gained this footage and then we did the survey we then made the ultimate decision to go with the one that won in terms of the survey rather than the video interview but from this did learn what people liked and what they wanted but when it came to the one person that choose the final one in the video interview she said she liked it because it did promote the artist effectively in that the font was big and clear and stood out to the audience but and that she liked the shot but that it could have been made better if the artist was in the same position but looking at the camera to reinforce the direct address and involvement with the audience. Everyone involved within the video audience feedback were able to assign it to the correct genre and that it would catch all their attentions if they were to see it within an actual magazine which we were happy about as a group as it meant we we were able to include all the elements we wanted in order to make this clear to our target demographic. Annabelle's audience feedback can be viewed in full below.

It was very close in terms of votes when it came to the audience feedback for the magazine advert particularly between the one where he is looking directly at the camera and happens to be the same shot we've used for our digipak and the one where he is much further away and looking down however, when looking at our feedback collectively both the survey and video and what we felt as a team personally we decided on using the long shot of Christian (Ryan) where he is looking down as it's different to the front panel of the digipak but similar so links can be made between the two and also puts an emphasis on the promotion side such as the album, release date and reviews as well as showcasing the artist himself and the guitar which showcases his true talent. Overall, I'm really happy with our magazine advert as I believe it meets the aim and requirements of a magazine advert and serves as a good representation of our artist and genre as well as making clear links between the different texts/products that allows the artist to be identified easily. I think both our digipak and magazine advert are really effective in terms of their professionalism via the editing technique we used and the shots, font and overall style reflect the artist and what we wanted to achieve in a positive manner.
